Working from a café in this ward comes down to three things, and only one of them is usually advertised.

Air conditioning

This is the one that decides it, and in Bến Thành Ward it is not universal. Bến Thành Market has none. A good number of the places around it are open-fronted with a fan, which is pleasant in January and an endurance test in August.

An hour is the unit that matters. A room you can sit in for an hour without giving up is a different product from a room you can sit in for fifteen minutes, and in this heat the distinction is not about comfort — it is about whether the visit happens at all.

Ours is air conditioned.

Wi-Fi that is actually free

Free, no purchase threshold, no code that expires after thirty minutes. We say this plainly because “free Wi-Fi” in this ward sometimes means the first hour.

A room that stays quiet

This is the one nobody can promise honestly, and we are going to be careful about it.

What we can tell you is structural. We are in the banking blocks on Nguyễn Thái Bình, not on the market frontage. The street is offices rather than shopfronts, which means it is busy at lunchtime and quiet either side of it, and by six in the evening it empties in a way a street near the market never does. We chose a small room and fewer seats rather than filling it.

What we cannot tell you is how it sounds full, because it has only just opened. The room is new, and that question gets answered by the people coming in the first week rather than by us in advance.

The honest limits

  • Not power at every seat. Some seats, and we are not going to claim otherwise until somebody has counted them.
  • Ground floor only. There is no upstairs to send you to when the room is busy. What the room is at its busiest is what everyone gets.
  • Drinks only, no food. Thirty-five of them. If you are settling in for four hours you will need to leave and eat, and the market is seven minutes away.
  • We have never been busy. Every claim above describes an empty room. Come and hold us to them.

Where we are

42 Nguyễn Thái Bình, Bến Thành Ward, District 1. About seven minutes on foot from Bến Thành Market, and under two minutes from the Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts, which is the nearest landmark to our door.
