The Ho Chi Minh City Museum of Fine Arts sits at 97A Phó Đức Chính, in Bến Thành Ward. From our door at 42 Nguyễn Thái Bình it is about 116 metres, roughly 2 minutes on foot by OpenStreetMap routing — nearer than the market, nearer than the metro, nearer than anything else we list.

We had not mentioned it once until today, which was an oversight worth admitting: it is the closest thing of any significance to this café.

What is the Museum of Fine Arts?

Three ochre-and-white buildings around a courtyard, built in the 1930s as a private house for one of the wealthiest families in Saigon, and turned into a museum in the 1980s. The architecture is a large part of the visit — tiled floors, shuttered windows, one of the oldest lifts in the city.

The collection runs from ancient Óc Eo and Champa sculpture through to twentieth-century Vietnamese painting, including a substantial body of work from the war years. The upper floors are the quiet ones.

Why it suits a morning

It is indoors, which in this ward between eleven and three is the whole argument. It is also small enough to do properly in ninety minutes without the forced-march feeling of a national museum.

And it is on a street most visitors never turn down. Phó Đức Chính runs behind the market, in the banking blocks, and it is noticeably quieter than the two streets either side of it.

Where to sit afterwards

The honest version: several cafés sit closer to the museum’s own entrance than we do, and one of them has the museum in its name. What we have is a café with air conditioning, free Wi-Fi and space to sit for an hour without being moved on — which after ninety minutes on tiled floors in August is the specific thing you will want.

Practical notes

• The entrance is on Phó Đức Chính, not on the larger road behind it.
• Photography rules vary by room and are posted at each door.
• The courtyard is uncovered. Midday there is hotter than the street.
• If you are coming from Bến Thành Market, the museum is on the far side of the ward from it — roughly 400 metres, and we are on the way.
